With some remodels, like new walk-in showers, remodeling companies can offer a pretty consistent price range based on factors like scope and accessories. Why does it seem so much more difficult to get a price range for windows? Can’t companies just offer a clear per-window cost? Unfortunately, it’s not quite that simple.

Today, we’re going to cover one of the biggest factors that can impact how much window replacement costs, and that’s the size of your windows. We’ll cover:

Assessing the Size of Your Windows
When you schedule a window replacement consultation, your design consultant will take precise measurements of your windows. Here are a couple of questions homeowners often ask during that process.
How Are Windows Measured?
Windows are measured using a unique system called “united inches,” or UI. You can get the united inches of any square or rectangular window by:
- Measuring the length from one inner edge of the window jamb to the other in inches
- Measuring the height from the upper edge of the window jamb to the bottom in inches
- Adding (not multiplying) those two measurements, i.e., length + height = united inches
Let’s say your window is 18 inches wide and 12 inches tall. This window is 30 united inches (18+12=32).
Are My Windows Considered Large?
As you might expect, larger windows generally cost more than smaller windows. (Don’t worry, we’ll get into the “why” later.)
How do you know if your windows are going to be considered large by a window replacement company? While there may be slight variation from one company to another, this table breaks down the sizes that are generally considered small, medium, and large in the window replacement industry.

Are My Windows a Standard Size?
Truthfully, the subject of standard window sizes is a bit controversial in the window replacement industry.
For example, you’re going to see a lot of small and medium-sized windows in the mid-century modern homes of North Dallas, whereas the modern farmhouse style popular in areas like Frisco will feature larger windows. In other words, standards shifted across time and architectural styles.
Speaking of shifting, every home settles over time, which is one of the most complicating factors when it comes to window measurements and window installment. Your windows may technically fall into a standard range, but subtle changes in the slope of your house can affect the dimensions of the rough openings in your walls.
All of that said, certain dimensions (like the ones in the table above) are more common, and they do tend to cost less than unique, custom window sizes. (More on that later, too.)
Why Large Windows Cost More Than Small Windows
As we mentioned already, you’re generally going to see a higher price tag on bigger windows. The simplest way to explain this is that bigger windows require more materials than smaller windows. If we zoom in one what that really looks like, we’re also talking about:
- Stronger frames to secure the larger surface area of glass
- Additional insulating measures to ensure your larger windows aren’t causing energy loss
- Longer and more complex installation, possibly with more than one person working on a single window
That isn’t to say that homeowners never encounter situations where their smaller windows cost more than their larger windows. For example, a small circular window could cost more than a medium-sized casement window because in this case, shape is playing a role in the price, too.
When we’re generalizing, however, it’s usually safe to assume that your biggest windows will cost more than your smallest windows.
Why Custom Windows Cost More Than Standard Windows
When you’re installing a batch of, say, 30” x 36” windows, your window replacement company can probably get them pretty quickly from their manufacturing partner. This is because common window sizes are manufactured in bulk and kept in stock to meet a steady flow of demand.
If your window dimensions are totally unique, you’ll have to have panes and frames custom-designed, which will cost more. Custom designing takes more skill, attention, and labor, and it may involve materials that aren’t commonly used.
There’s also a good chance that the lead time will be longer when you need custom windows. Again, this is because while standard windows are probably pre-made and ready to ship to your window replacement company, those custom windows need to be built from scratch.
Additional Window Features That Impact Window Replacement Costs
Size is absolutely one of the biggest factors that determines how much window replacement costs per window. Additional factors include:
- Shape: standard windows are square or rectangular, and unique shapes like circles are going to fall into that custom category that requires special craftsmanship and costs more
- Glass: designs like double-pane vs. triple-pane, double glazing vs. single glazing, and additional glass treatments will also add to your total cost per window
- Aesthetic customizations: in keeping with the architectural style of your home, you may want to add something like mullions, which actually divide a single frame into multiple pieces of glass (as opposed to grilles, which create that grid look without dividing up the frame) and ultimately cost more
- Colors and finishes: many window replacement companies can now deliver something like a vinyl frame in more colors than ever before, but deviating from a standard color (like white) can as much as double the cost of your window
