What Impacts Your Walk-In Shower Cost the Most?

It’s no secret that homeownership gets expensive fast. Naturally, it’s a whole lot cheaper to make targeted upgrades in your current property than to buy a whole new house, but you’re still wary of remodeling costs in 2026. If a new walk-in shower costs upwards of $11,000 these days, you want to know what you’re actually paying for (and how to keep costs low).

At ZINTEX Remodeling Group, we know we’re not the cheapest shower remodeling company on the market, and we stand by our pricing. Today, we’re going to talk about what factors impact the cost of a walk-in shower in 2026, when paying more is worth it, and how you can design a shower you love while sticking to a budget that works for your family.

Table of Contents

Your Walk In Shower Materials

Materials typically account for about 40-60% of your total bathroom remodel estimate. Different materials are available at different price ranges, and within those price ranges you’ll find different levels of quality. First, let’s look at the average price range of some of the most popular shower materials homeowners use today (not including the additional cost of labor).

Materials (does not include labor)

Cost Range

Acrylic

$5,000 - $15,000

Tile

$4,000 - $20,000

Corian or Natural Stone

$10,000 - $17,000

Now, let’s zoom in a little further. Why does something like acrylic cost as little as $5,000 and up to $15,000 or more? On the low end, you’re looking at cheap walk-in shower insert kits that typically last between 5-7 years. They’re not customizable and they tend to come in standard colors only.

The acrylic shower walls we offer at ZINTEX are going to fall into the higher range of around $10,000-$15,000 (out of a total estimate of $11,000-$22,000+). Manufactured by brands like Jacuzzi, our acrylic shower wall surrounds last a minimum of 15 years and come in premium colors, patterns, and finishes.

Ultimately, the cheapest materials are low in quality and not built to last. That said, you’re probably only spending $20,000 on materials alone for a luxury shower, which may be the most aesthetically pleasing option but isn’t more durable than mid-range options.

The Quality of Your Shower Installation

Labor typically costs between 25-40% of your total bathroom budget, even if you’re attempting to do that labor yourself. While DIY remodeling can lower upfront costs, you’ll probably still need to invest in the right tools for the job. Plus, you may find yourself hiring plumbers or electricians to tackle complex problems behind your shower walls.

Setting DIY options aside, let’s talk about the cost of professional labor. You can hire professionals at a below-average cost, but you’ll end up paying for installation that doesn’t meet industry standards. To keep the cost of labor low, cheap companies have to hire workers with minimal experience. They’re also not going to invest money in consumer protections like liability insurance.

At ZINTEX, we can’t compete with the cheapest companies because it takes good pay to attract top talent. In 25 years of business, we’ve found that charging more to send out the best bathroom remodelers in all of our markets ultimately benefits everyone, including the customer. Experienced, high-quality installation leads to showers that look great, work perfectly, and last for 20 years.

Your Walk-In Shower Design Features

One of the benefits of hiring a bathroom remodeling company to design and install your walk-in shower is that you have more control over the custom features. Popular examples of shower customizations include:

  • Premium wall colors
  • Premium wall designs (e.g., etched “tile” patterns)
  • Built-in storage accessories like soap niches, corner shelves, and shower caddies
  • Accessibility features like grab bars, shower bases with a low threshold entry, and built-in seating
  • Glass shower doors and enclosures

Take a look at our shower pricing. As you can see, a basic walk-in shower costs between $11,000 and $16,000 and comes with basic showerheads, a shower rod, standard wall colors, and two shelves. At the next tier, you can upgrade to premium shower walls, two or more shelves, a premium showerhead, and a grab bar for $16,000 to $19,000.

(Keep in mind that this breakdown isn’t exact. For example, we’ve built showers at the intermediate price range that include a shower seat rather than a sliding glass enclosure. Your design consultant can help you to stick to your budget by prioritizing the features you need most and skipping the ones you don’t.)

The Scope of Your Shower Remodel

The last factor that can have a significant impact on the total cost of your walk-in shower remodel is the scope of the project. Scope defines the size of the remodel and the amount of work and materials needed to complete it. The larger the scope, the higher the total cost.

Scope can be hard to define, and it’s easiest to understand by comparing projects with a small or limited scope to projects with large scope. Here are a few examples.

Low scope

Moderate scope

Large scope

Installing a shower using all existing plumbing

Installing a shower using some existing plumbing and some replacement pipes or valves

Moving or adding to the existing plumbing to install a new shower in a different location than the old shower

Building a small shower with a standard base size of 36” x 36”

Building a medium-sized shower with a standard base size of 36” x 60”

Building a large shower with custom dimensions

Renovating your shower before things like water damage build up

Renovating your shower when you first notice problems like mold or water damage

Renovating your shower when it needs significant structural repairs and mold remediation

One way to keep costs low if you think you’re going to have a larger remodel scope due to things like water damage is to work with a company like ZINTEX that can handle all of those repairs for you. The alternative is to hire contractors from different companies to do things like subfloor repair and plumbing, which can add up quickly.

Is a More Expensive Walk In Shower Worth It?

The cheapest walk-in shower is almost always going to be the lowest in quality. Does that mean that the most expensive walk-in shower will be the highest in quality? What does a high-quality walk-in shower really look like?

Quality or Feature

Worth It

Not Worth It

Licensed and insured installers

Lifetime limited warranty

Durable, waterproof shower wall materials

Luxury shower wall materials

☑️

Accessible accessories (e.g., grab bars)

☑️

Storage accessories (e.g., soap niches)

☑️

Extra-cost warranty extension

Intricate aesthetic customizations (e.g., pebbled floors)

Sauna or steam shower systems

A high-quality walk-in shower is one that:

  • Looks good and aligns with your design style
  • Meets your functional needs
  • Isn’t hard to keep clean
  • Remains waterproof until you replace it
  • Lasts more than a decade without showing signs of wear and tear

What’s “worth it” is often subjective, especially when we’re talking about customizations and accessibility features. That said, some expensive add-ons or “luxury” materials are gimmicky, don’t come with a strong ROI, and ultimately aren’t worth the extra cost.
