Your Window Materials: More Than Just Glass

This one may seem obvious, but the majority of what you’re paying for when you replace your windows is the window itself, and that’s not just the glass. Full window replacements can also include:

Window frames, which come in materials like vinyl, aluminum, and composite
Window hardware like locks, tilt latches, and cranks
Various sealing components, like moisture-resistant foam and weatherstripping
Customization options like window glazing and grilles

Within each of these categories, you’re also looking at the level of quality and energy performance as well as overall functionality.

Generally speaking, you’re looking at an increase in price for better energy performance and more customization, although that doesn’t inherently mean that a higher price tag always means better quality.

Most companies will acknowledge that you’re also paying for labor, which tends to account for about 25-40% of your total window replacement price. What does it actually mean to pay for labor, and how does the labor beyond your install factor into that price?

Let’s put it plainly: for a company to hire the best of the best, they need to offer competitive pay rates. For a company to offer excellent 24/7 customer service, they need to pay a reliable customer service team.

This is where the saying “you get what you pay for” really rings true. If you hire the cheapest company, you’re hiring a company that pays their installers a below-average pay rate, which means those installers probably have limited experience and the company probably has a high turnover rate.

As much as that might seem like an internal problem that has nothing to do with you, it ultimately means poor craftsmanship and no real dedication to your satisfaction.
